History of Brunswick, Topsham and Harpswell Maine Including the Ancient Territory Known As Pejepscot
Published in Paperback by Heritage Books (September, 1989)
Authors: George Augustus Wheeler and Henry Warren Wheeler
Average review score:

Excellent historical reference for these towns
This is an excellent reference guide to placenames, geneaology, streets, and early title chains for these three communities. In addition, it is full of anecdotes regarding colonial life in Mid Coast Maine from the late 17th century almost to the end of the 19th century. Published in 1877-8, it is surprisingly accurate in its portrayal of events which took place two hundred years before. Most of the information comes from the records of the Pejepscot Proprietors, a group of wealthy men who had the grants from the King necessary for selling property to settlers. This book has been my best aid for framing out the history of a parcel or area of land in any of these towns. As a Professional Land Surveyor, I could not work in my field and have the most complete information in my files without it. Bruce Martinson, PLS Dirigo Land Services, Inc. 927 Old Brunswick Road Bath, Maine 04530

Holyoke, MA
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 July, 1997)
Author: Craig Della Penna
Average review score:

Great Book! One of the "Images of America" titles.
Let me preface that this is my uncle's book, so I am somewhat biased!

However, I loved this book. He has put together a wonderful pictorial representation of old Holoyoke MA drawing on pictures from local historical archives. You really get a feel for what life was like during the turn of the century, and some visions of how it has changed.

This was my first "Images of America" book, but since then I have purchased numerous others. What a great way to see local istory.

The House of Purple Hearts: Stories of Vietnam Vets Who Find Their Way Back
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (May, 1995)
Author: Paul Solotaroff
Average review score:

Enthralling.
This is possibly the best down-home earthy style book I've read about the Vietnam Conflict. It is heartwrenching and true, and something you'll not soon forget. I'm sorry that it has fallen out of print, because it deals with an issue no one wants to talk about: the war we lost, and the stashing of our veterans out of public view.

The Illustrated Garden Book: A New Anthology by Robin Lane Fox
Published in Hardcover by Atheneum (October, 1986)
Authors: Vita Sackville-West and Freda Titford
Average review score:

Delightful
When we imagine heaven, we picture gardens. If there is a heaven with gardens, they must surely be like Vita Sackville-West's gardens at Sissinghurst. Mind you, when I read this book, I'm over-whelmed by a few sins, like greed and envy, and possibly lust, and I hope that doesn't disqualify me from heaven. I want gardens like these, never mind that the only thing green about me is envy, or that most of the plants won't grow in my climate.

This is a selected collection of gardening articles Vita Sackville-West wrote for The Observer, and charmingly illustrated with photographs and coloured sketches. Although there are gardening tips, it's a book to be read for pleasure. She wrote passionately and we can recklessly follow in our imagination, if not in reality.

An Image of Monhegan, Platinum Prints
Published in Paperback by Precipice Publications (01 June, 2000)
Author: John Kleinhans
Average review score:

Stunning!
The images in this book go right to the soul. It's not just the platinum technique that uniquely makes the highlights seem so real, nor is it only the natural beauty of this magical place, but, also, the artist's keen eye for proportion, composition and, what?, the quiet voice within that such places inspire. This book is truly a work of art and, personally, has become one of my "treasures."

In and Out of Portland w/ Children
Published in Paperback by MidRun Press (01 April, 1998)
Author: Jane Petrlik Smolik
Average review score:

Excellent guide for children's activities and easy to read.
This book saved our vacation on the bad weather days. We had researched Portland and the surrounding areas before we went to Maine but this book added information that we had not discovered. We would have saved time had we read this book first because it was all that we needed. It was easy reading for my 8 1/2 yr.old and the amusing and educational facts made it fun for him.
